An Eye for an Eye

Should You Get Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik is an eye surgery involving the lens of the eye, in which the cornea is cut open with a laser to create a flap, then the lens of the eye is corrected with a laser as well. Lasik doesn't give you perfect vision, but it can improve your vision quite a bit, giving you the ability to see without the use of contacts or eyeglasses for most activities. Lasik is not for everyone; if you are not healthy or your vision is very poor, Lasik eye surgery may not be for you. Read on for more information about Lasik eye surgery to help you decide if you should get it.

Are You Healthy?

If you are in poor health, or you have very poor vision, you may not be eligible for Lasik eye surgery. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or other issues that could affect your vision, Lasik may not be the right choice for you, as your vision can actually worsen with surgery. If you have a bad astigmatism or your vision is very bad — whether it's nearsightedness or farsightedness — you may not be eligible. If however, you have a mild astigmatism or you are healthy overall, you may be eligible for Lasik. It's best to discuss your health and your vision with your optometrist to see if you are eligible.

Do You Play Sports?

Most people that play sports or are involved in different sporting activities may have a hard time with wearing contacts or eyeglasses while playing or taking part in the activity. You may want to have Lasik to help you see better and so you don't have to worry about losing a contact lens while participating or getting your glasses fogged up or broken while participating as well. If you don't have to worry about these things, you may perform better, in addition to being able to see better.

Although Lasik isn't going to give you 20/20 vision, it can enhance your vision significantly, leaving you without having to purchase eyeglasses or contacts for quite a while. Your vision may worsen again with time, as Lasik doesn't last forever, but you will have that enhanced vision for quite some time.
